Since starting out my kayak camping fun last year in late fall, I began with as cheap of gear as I could just so that I could make it happen. As I expected, a lot of gear has changed, and a lot of lessons have been learned along the way. One such experience I have had is with hammocks. I started out with an Amazon "cheapy" beginner no frills hammock. The brand was Blue Sky Hammock. It was your run-of-the-mill bug netted gathered in style hammock. (see left pic) It wasn't extremely comfortable, but at the time I used it, not knowing what else was out there, it worked just fine. It did have the shoulder squeeze, and I still haven't messed with it enough to make it where I can sleep at an angle. I think I would need some amsteel to make a built in ridge line to get it to do what I wanted.
The bug net portion was a must and it did its part. The other hammock I bought was for my wife and it was another "no name" type of hammock, of the same style. That one was an OJA brand name(see green hammock pic below right), if you could call it that.

Like most other beginner hammocks, we bought what we could afford so we could go spend time together outdoors.
As time progressed, and I had the opportunity during a week long kayak camping trip states away, to use a buddy's Hennesey Expedition Classic Asym hammock. This is the one that you enter through the bottom using a Velcro opening. I had never before used an asymmetrical cut hammock that allowed you to easily lay at an angle providing a much more comfortable sleeping position. I instantly liked the hammock, and over the course of the next few nights, built up a lot of confidence in it's ability to hold me off the ground and provide protection from some light rain, and more. It didn't take a lot of intelligence to notice the difference between what I had, and the Hennessey. The difference was night and day, and even though the Hennessey was more expensive, I was easily able to justify the cost by experience. The point of this blog is to say that I just picked up my first Hennesey, which is an Expedition Asym Zip model.

I bought it from the Hennesey website, and so they will send me free Snake skins, water collection system, and a free Tarp!! I'm very excited about it, and I am looking forward to using it as soon as it comes in and it stops being 100 degree weather!
